After the success of films like Salaam Bombay, Slumdog Millionaire, here is a movie which holds the caliber to jolt people’s mind with its content and which won accolades at the International front in festivals like Edinburg, Montreal, IFFI and many others and also with the National award to the child Actor Shaam as ‘Municipality Ghatkopar’. With such honors backing it, this becomes a must watch movie of this year so far. A movie made at a mediocre budget and with no star cast relies heavily on its content and when it’s related to sensitive issues like child abandonment is quite a tough sell.
Thanks Maa is a movie about the fate of abandoned babies in India and the life of street kids in Mumbai - an issue which was very effectively tapped and conveyed the message it had to.
Municipality Ghatkopar while on the run from a reformatory home finds a baby in municipality garbage and saves the baby from a stray dog. Municipality along with his four friends Soda, Sursuri, Cutting and Dhed-Shaana begin a journey to reunite the baby with the mother. During the journey the darker shades of reality is shown from an eye of baby and this journey takes Municipality to different downtrodden people in the society like pimps, a pedophile, a disloyal husband and many more. There are constant gripping and breath taking moments that will act as an eye opener to many.
Thanks Maa is a film that will drain you emotionally with the authenticity of the concept. Director Irfan Kamal has done a fabulous job as a debutant and taking the risk of such challenging script at the first step and making a movie which has been rated A by the censor Board. The amount of research and analysis done on the movie is quite evident with the facts and figures that is being shown in the film and also the website (http://www.thanksmaa.com/).
Music by Ranjit Barot is rhythmic and manages to capture the emotions throughout the film. The songs ‘Eh Khuda’ and ‘Tor e bin’ by Sajid Wajid are a treat to the ear and are enriched with beautiful lyrics. Ajayan’s cinematography is very commendable with few brilliant top angle shots especially the Ganesh Visarjan shots. Amit Saxena’s editing is admirable.
Kids steal the limelight with laudable and spirited performances by the National Award winner Shamm and also from his four friends. Enjoy some of the typical ‘Mumbaiya’ dialogues from the film which has been of censorious in nature and that being the main reason for its adult rating. Ranvir Shorey deserves appreciation with his classy performance.
This movie deserves to be sent to Oscars and it does justify its international accolades and pride. Expect the movie to get many more other awards this year too. It also sets an example how this medium can be used to inculcate some good knowledge to people regarding such issues. Highly recommended
