MIFF has come a long way since its beginning and now being rated among the world's best and largest documentary film festival. The award money has been enhanced from this MIFF in each category.
THE ELEVENTH Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short and Animation Films (MIFF 2010) will begin from Wednesday (February 3). The current edition of the festival is hosting a number of interactive sessions, seminars and forums discussing documentary culture, working environment, raising funds, changing style of acting, content in Indian cinema etc. Speakers like Subhash Ghai, Javed Akhtar and Mike Pande are celebrity quotient.

The award money has been enhanced from this MIFF in each category and the total award money now is Rs 22.75 lakh along with Golden and Silver Conches in different categories of competition. The best short film / documentary (up to 30 minutes) will be awarded a Golden Conch and a cash prize of three lakh rupees. Another Golden Conch and three lakh rupees will be given to the best film/ documentary over 30 minutes duration. There are also awards for best animation film, fiction film and student’s film.Best Debut Director Award: Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari will give a trophy and one lakh rupees for the best debut film of a director.
Dr V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award will be awarded to an Indian film maker for his/her contribution to documentary film movement, with cash award and a trophy.
The highlights of 11th MIFF are introduction of new categories such as Puppet Films and Remembering Freedom Icons section. Another salient feature is introduction of ‘Best Student Film / Video’ award. This award will give a platform to the student filmmakers to showcase their work and compete internationally.Puppet films: A special segment of the festival this year will be the screening of puppet films. Some of the films that will be screened are Snake and Jewellery, Monkey and Crocodile and Clever Jackal. This will be accompanied by a workshop on puppet film making.
Two sections such as international films and spectrum India, regular feature in the competition section have been reintroduced in the non competition section. This step has been taken to showcase the films that have not made it to the competition. The countries in focus this year are Argentina, Switzerland and Bhutan.
New merged section: From this edition International and Indian Competition Sections have been merged into one competition section. The retrospective section: This is focusing on stalwarts of Indian cinema like Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Mohammad Rafi, Sohrab Modi, Raj Kapoor, Balraj Sahni, Satyajit Ray and others. There will be jury’s retrospectives, women packages; Oscar nominated films, films on immigration issues, environment, global warming and homage to unsung heroes of freedom struggle. Most of the screenings will be complemented by interactive sessions with the filmmakers or personalities depicted in the films.
North East section: Paban Kumar’s (Manipur) latest film entitled ‘Mr India (46 min) documentary on the life of bodybuilder Khundrakpam Pradip Kumar will also be screened at the North East section
