It is time for movie-buffs to go crazy for the King of South and the ravishing diva of Bollywood are going to star in a film together. Yes ! Rajnikant and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are appearing together for the first time on the silver screen in Endhiran-The Robot.

While Endhiran audio release is going to be on July 31, but searches for the soundtrack of the movie such as endhiran songs download, enthiran mp3, enthiran mp3 free download, on the internet have already begun. The music release will be a star studded occasion in Malaysia.
According to sources, a message has been sent by Chief Minister N Karunanidhi for Endhiran and is going to be read out at the prestigious ceremony.

The music of the film is being launched by Think Audio. The copyrights of the music of the movie have been acquired by the company for a whooping 7 crore. The film is going to be released under Sun Pictures productions.

The songs of Endthiran have been composed by none other than the creator of music masterpieces, A.R. Rahman, who has created various soulful songs in the past, and therefore the expectations from the music of Endhiran are quite high. Till the movie releases, we are waiting with baited breath for the magnificent music release of Endhiran at Putrajaya International Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Endhiran trailer review

‘Chitty- The Robot; Speed 1 Terrahertz; Memory -1 Gigabyte. Programmed to be 100 times intelligent and talented than a normal human being. Knows all the languages on the face of earth.’ The most powerful robot ever made by man and we will be introduced to this wonder on September 3rd, the day Endhiran hits screens.

The movie is more than a month away, but the excitement is already palpable. Two years of tight secrecy has finally relented. The music is out and so is the trailer. The excitement that it has created is greater than what is generated by the actual release of most movies. That is the stature of the men associated with this mega venture. No doubt, all of you will now have the list of names involved in Endhiran by heart. But, really, it is hard for one to resist the temptation to roll out those names once again. After all, it is only rarely that there is a chance to dwell on these names at length, especially in connection with the same movie. So, here they are; Superstar, Shankar, Rahman, Kalanithi Maran, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and many more names that you will be hearing of in the next month or so. If anyone says that a bigger team than this exists in Indian cinema at present, then seriously, he’s got to be kidding. Because (pardon the cliché) ‘it does not get bigger than this’.

Sun Pictures started its promotional activities yesterday with the release of the trailer through TV. But, it has not reached its full fledged stage yet and that is why most of you might not have got a chance to get the first feel of what is in store. Well, don’t get upset because you can always scramble to Youtube to get your fill of Superstar and we too are here to provide you with every small detail that the biggest Indian movie ever divulges as it treads along towards D day. So, here goes the trailer review of Endhiran – The Robot. It is only rarely that a film becomes so huge that even its trailer demands or deserves a review. This is one such occasion and we hope that there are many more in future.

Now, the review. Well, what do you expect from a Shankar film? One word – grandeur. One look at Endhiran’s trailer and you will know that Shankar has gone many levels above all that he has done till now. If you thought that Sivaji was the pinnacle of ebullience, then you have to see the Endhiran trailer to believe that it was not. Such seems to be the scale of the film. But, we will have to wait to see the entire product to know exactly how and where the 150+ crores were spent. The one thing that the trailer definitely tells us is that much of that has definitely gone into visual effects. What we will get to see in the movie seems to be special effects and computer graphics that have never before been envisaged. There have been some good CG applications in Indian cinema over the years, like what we saw in Sarvvam last year. But, Endhiran is in a different league altogether. If you want to compare the standards of graphics that seem to be present in the movie, then it is films like Terminator and Matrix that you have to look at.

The story of Endhiran is definitely one that has never been tried in Indian cinema before because of the sheer technological expertise and costs that it would necessitate. Tamil cinema will be certainly proud that one of its directors has taken this step that would expedite the evolution of Indian cinema to the next level. But, for those who regularly watch English films, the plot might sound a tad familiar; but we are just guessing at this point of time. From what the trailer offers, it is all about Rajinikanth (the scientist) who constructs the world’s most powerful robot (again Rajinikanth), something that even Honda could not do, which can do almost everything that a human being can, in a much better way. But, what happens when the robot forgets the rules that were laid down by Issac Asimov to be followed by all robots and humanoids (so faithfully done by Arnold Schwarzenegger throughout the Terminator franchise); all mayhem is set loose as the uncontrollable robot runs riot. Who can stop him? This is our guess of the plot.
Most English movies choose New York as the stage for all big disasters and monsters to attack. The big city has been used for its instant familiarity all over the world and also perhaps for its suspension bridges and proximity to water bodies which make excellent settings for heart stopping action. Well, Shankar seems to have taken up Chennai as the stage for Robot to strike and from the few fleeting glimpses we think that some of the major landmarks in the city might feature as backdrops of action sequences. We are quite certain about some action atop the Guindy flyover. The only regret is that the colossal ‘Secretariat’ structure could not be ready in time for Shankar to think of a pulsating action sequence involving the structure. There also seem to be some absolutely delightful and colorful sets (in metallic theme, apt for Robots) that have been constructed by Sabu Cyril.

The action, the visual effects, the art; all this makes the film big. But, what makes it huge? What gives a producer enough confidence to say yes to a budget of 150 crores? There is only one answer – Superstar. You have to see it to believe it. Never has he looked as young as this in the recallable past. Never has he looked as dashing and stylish as he does now. As wine gets better with age, Superstar’s style only seems to get better every time he appears on screen. There seem to be dozens of get ups and styles that he has donned in the movie; especially for the Robot character. Are they all good? What a question! The only real question is which one of them is best. All Superstar fans (we guess that everyone is), get ready for an absolute treat. There is no doubt; he is still the undisputed King of style. And, in the, midst of all the excitement one forgets that this is the first movie in more than 25 years that will have two Superstars on screen at the same time. Do we need a bigger reason to celebrate?

There seems to be no end to what one can talk about this movie, just after watching a one minute trailer. Yes, we have not yet talked about Rahman or Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and a lot of other things. But, one guesses that the next month or so will be there just for that and much more. So, go watch the trailer as soon as you can, get the first feel of the biggest Indian movie ever (bet you, this one is international in its standards) and keep coming back because the countdown has begun and you don’t want to miss any of the action. Endhiran – The Robot will soon take you by storm.

MADHARASAPATTINAM MOVIE REVIEW

MADHARASAPATTINAM MOVIE REVIEW

Review by : Behindwoods review board

Starring: Arya,

Amy Jackson, Nasser,

VMC.Haneefa, M. S. Bhaskar.

Direction: A L Vijay

Music: G V Prakash Kumar

Production: Kalapathi S. Aghoram

Get ready to be transported back into Madras. The makers have promised a trip from Chennai to Madharasapattinam and that is exactly what has been delivered through this movie. But, is it just a trip back in time or is there more to look forward to? Before we begin analyzing Madharasapattinam for what it is, let us lay down lines that quite clearly define what it is not. Any movie set in the pre-independence era carries the expectations of portraying the freedom struggle. Madharasapattinam makes little or no attempts to get into that. Yes, the events of the freedom struggle and subsequent achievement of independence from British rule are important events that have a bearing on the story. But, those events have not been shown in detail, nor have any of the legendary names associated with the freedom been depicted. So, Madharasapattinam is not a documentation of the freedom struggle and events associated with it. Then what is it?
It is a love story set against the backdrop of India that is on the verge of independence. A young British lady (Amy Jackson) is visiting India. She is from a family that is well connected to the highest echelons of power in the Madras presidency. As it is, tensions are brewing between the British and Indians all over the country. That rubs off on a small washer man community in Madras who stand in the way of the powerful British personnel when they attempt to evict them from their place. It hurts the ego of a highly placed British officer who challenges a young dhobi (Arya) for a one-on-one which would decide the fate of the place. The British lady happens to be a silent spectator to all that transpires between the British and the dhobi community; she notices the young man who has the courage to stand up to a mighty force. Soon, she finds herself attracted to this man who also seems to be reciprocating those feelings. But, the proximity between the two does not escape the eyes of the power hierarchy who look down upon the relation as a disgrace to the family and the empire. With freedom fast approaching and the British getting ready to leave the country, time is running out for the couple who have to make a decision between love and country. What happens to the love story that faces the wrath of mighty empire whose ego has been badly bruised by the freedom struggle? Watch Madharasapattinam to find out.
The storyline and the events might sound a bit familiar to you. Yes, there are points in the movie where one is able to draw parallels to other great movies. The opening portions remind us of Titanic, while the challenge thrown by the British at the dhobi community gives us a Lagaan feel. But, in spite of all this, Madharasapattinam has a unique identity and the reason for that is in the title of the film itself - Madras. That is the single biggest highlight of the movie.
Full marks to the team of Madharasapattinam for recreating Madras, which existed only in photos, history books and minds of people who lived during that era. Though most of us do not have a very clear idea about how Madras would have looked like before 1947, the picturisation is good enough to convince us that this is an authentic representation. First on the order of merit for making this possible is the art department headed by Selva Kumar. We are taken to a Mount Road (not Anna Salai) that is not overflowing with traffic, the old Washermanpet, the haloed building of the Madras Central and the Buckingham Canal which once was the backbone of a very efficient drainage system of the city. We are even shown a Cooum that is not filthy; which is hard to imagine, considering the state of the river these days. All sets are exquisitely constructed and look very original. Hordes of junior artistes have been employed in proper period attire to add to the authentic feel. What is provided by the art department in terms of magnificent sets has been enhanced into a wonderful on screen experience through Nirav Shah’s lens. The cinematographer is in top form capturing Madras in all its glory. The tone adopted to give a period theme is apt.
Other technical aspects of Madharasapattianam also a delight, especially G.V. Prakash’s background music. The small touches that he has provided, especially when the love between the lead couple begins to bloom, are wonderful. The songs too are a treat, especially ‘Vaama Dorayamma’ and ‘Aaruyire’. Though there is a feeling that adding a few western pieces here and there would have made it even more perfect for the movie. Costumes of the entire cast are almost perfect, especially Amy Jackson’s.
Performances are a real delight in Madharasapattinam. The one who walks away with the top honors is Amy Jackson for a beautiful portrayal of a lady torn between her love and the mighty empire. She looks absolutely beautiful, emotes well through her expressive eyes and is able to earn the sympathy of the audiences during tough times. Arya is perfect for the character of the dhobi who is also a wrestler. He is intense, manly, yet soft and romantic when it is required. A convincing performance. The rest of the cast too is spot on in delivering the goods. The British cast looks convincing as the colonial power. VMC Haneefa delights as the dubashi (translator) lending many moments of fun as he plays around with languages that he does not know. Nasser brings power and intensity to the character that he portrays. The lady who portrays the aged Amy Jackson, through whose memory the story is told, also impresses a great deal
While there are positives aplenty for Madharasapattinam, there are one or two aspects that could have been better. The dialogues do not seem to be the kind that would have been spoken before 1947, the lines look very contemporary, especially the Tamil dialogues. One can overlook this in a commercial film. Using the proper 1940s Madras Tamil could have worked either way for the movie. There are quite a few English dialogues (understandably), but they do not look like an inconvenience or act as a barrier between the film and the audiences; the subtitles have been done well.
Overall, Madharasapattinam is a film that takes you back in time and shows you a Madras that exists only in photos and memory. Hats off to the entire team for making this possible and kudos to Vijay for heading this team and pulling off the huge task. Also thanks to AGS Films for taking up such a subject which would have definitely cost a lot. Madharasapattinam is a pretty often seen love story where poor boy meets rich girl, much to the angst of the family. But, it is the backdrop and the treatment that make it a different experience. Watch Madharasapattinam for some great art work, cinematography, performances and to appreciate an effort that is a rare occurrence in Tamil cinema. But, do not look for a documentation of the freedom struggle and other historical milestones. Just enjoy the trip from Chennai to Madharasapattinam
Verdict: Enjoyable trip to Madras Presidency!

Ten reasons to watch Raavanan

1. For Mani Ratnam fans, this one is reason enough, but for you sceptics out there, here are nine more!

2. If you thought Iruvar, Roja and Bombay were Mani Ratnam's best, Raavan/ Raavanan is going to stun you! Says who? Just about everybody who has worked for the project! "Mani Ratnam has made this film like a penance. Mani Ratnam, Vikram and Aishwarya Rai will definitely get National Awards," said lyricist Vairamuthu.

3. Mani Ratnam's Raavanan is also special for its huge star cast: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Prithviraj, Karthik, Prabhu, Priyamani, Munna, John Vijay in Tamil and Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Govinda, Ravikissen, Priyamani, Nikhil Dwivedi in Hindi (Raavan).

4. Most parts of the movie were shot in deep interiors of dense forests. Our hero plays a tribal chief!

5. Shyam Kaushal has choreographed the thrilling climax fight. "The shooting for Raavan began in January 2009 in Kolkata, then Ooty, and the climax was shot on Malsej Ghat, where there's a scene on bridges 2,000 feet above mountains. Mani loves challenges and likes challenging his actors and technicians too. His quest for perfection puts them through a grueling routine," he said.

6. For the first time, Vikram simultaneously plays two diametrically different roles in two languages of the same film. Vikram play the role of Dev (Ram) in Hindi and Beera (Raavan) in Tamil.

7. Aishwarya plays the role of Ragini, a spunky classical dance teacher. The first look of the movie shows her dancing gracefully in a song.

8. Interestingly, Aishwarya Rai will dub in her own voice for the Tamil version while Vikram is all set to speak Hindi in Raavan.

9. Another highlight is Prabhu and Karthi, co-stars in the blockbuster Mani Ratnam movie Agni Natchathiram, they team up again for the same director after a long gap.

10. A.R. Rahman's chart-busters, Vairamuthu's adorable lyrics, Santhosh Sivan's marvellous camera work and to top of all, 'The Mani Ratnam factor'. Well Raavanan is definitely one of the most-anticipated films of the year. So get ready for some action this Friday (June 18, 2010).

Mani Ratnam has carved a movie titled as Raavan (Hindi) which is also going o release in Tamil with the name Raavanan (Tamil). The same movie will be dubbed into Telugu with the name of Villan and will be releasing on June 18, 2010. Suhasini Mani ratnam will be receiving an award at Venice Film fest, on behalf of her hubby, for excellence in Indian cinema.
The movie features actor Vikram, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead in the Hindi version. While the Tamil- Telugu version will have actor Vikram, Prithviraj and Ash in he lead. Here is the storyline of Raavan, Raavanan and Villan.
Story
Raavan (Vikram) has a sister (Priyamani), whom he loves immensely and pampers her a lot, as they have no elders. Incidentally, Ram (Prithvi Raj – Abhishek Bachchan in Hindi) kills Raavan’s sister due to a cause and a reason.
Raavan decides to seek revenge on Ram and so waits for the right moment to strike. Ram is in love with Sita (Aishwarya) and marries her against his parent’s blessings. Raavan kidnaps Sita on the first night of ram and Sita and takes her to his abode, which is in the forest.
Due to some incidents and the past of Raavan, Sita falls in love with Raavan. Meanwhile, Ram discovers Raavan’s hiding and fights and defeats him to take his Sita back home. But Sita doesn’t want to go back to Ram as she falls in love with Raavan deeply.
Mani Ratnam’s Raavan or Raavanan is inspired by the ‘Ashokavanam’ parva of Indian epic Ramayana. So, the characters are named and are lined up parallel to the Ramayana epic.

SINGAM SONGS DOWNLOAD

SINGAM MOVIE REVIEW Review by : Behindwoods review board Starring: Suriya, Anushka, Prakash Raj, Vivek, Manoramma.Direction: HariMusic: Devi Sri PrasadProduction: BIG Pictures The much-awaited Hari-Suriya combo is back in this landmark 25th film of Suriya. The story was initially narrated to Vijay for his 50th film by Hari but for some reasons Vijay could not do it and Suriya lapped it up.
Throughout the career graph of Suriya, the actor has diligently worked towards balancing the niche and the mass and this time around he has proven once again that he can deliver a commercial masala flick with as finesse as he can deliver a performance-oriented film. It is Suriya all over; the guy stumps with some gravity defying stunts, mouths a few intense sentimental dialogues, floors his lady partner passionately and challenges the baddies and cleanses the society from obnoxious elements.
Durai Singam is the SI of Nallur police station who is into the police force mainly to satisfy his father. His ambition is to expand his provision stores business to a super market. All the same, he is sincere in his work and is the darling of his town as he settles many disputes in his town amicably. Mayilvaganan (Prakash Raj), the fraudster from Chennai, involved in criminal activities, gets trapped into a police case which requires him to sign in Nallur police station for a period of 15 days. There is a proxy who comes to do this job in the police station which triggers an encounter between Prakash Raj and Suriya that leads into a series of events between the two which form the rest of Singam.
Meanwhile, an offshoot of this plot is the love angle between Anushka and Suriya, the former comes to the village to her grand parents place for vacation and bumps in to the latter. Thankfully, it is not love at the second meeting but something that happens gradually with believable events.
Vivek as Erimalai takes charge of comedy in Singam as Suriya’s subordinate and acquits himself well. The comedy scenes do bring the intended effect and the lorry scene which results in Vivek’s suspension tops the list. There are many such enjoyable instances which are sure to get into the comedy channels soon.
Anushka looks good and acts too. When she is on the phone with Suriya and gets caught by her father Nasser, the instant play of expression to get out of the situation is noteworthy. The lady does have a good future. She rides on twin horses with glamorous costumes in the song sequences and a homely demeanor in the rest of the film. Radha Ravi and Sumithra as the parents of Suriya do a convincing job. The other supporting cast members are satisfactory.
Music by Devi Sri Prasad is nothing to rave about except the En Idhayam number. However, the morphing technique adopted to cover a few frames in this number is unwarranted. Background score is also ordinary. True to the name Singam, the film is dominated by action sequences but there is no blood and gore. Cinematographer Priyan has done a decent job.
Director Hari has stuck to his genre and has delivered a crisp film. Although the events and the premise are not something new in Singam and the formula of one scene each of ‘action-romance-sentiments-comedy', is strictly adhered to, he should be credited for rendering an engaging and entertaining product. He succeeds in holding the interest of the audience to a larger extent and satisfies the viewers.
However, in the second half, the interactions between the villain and hero get a bit drab and seem to drag on. There is not much of an intelligence displayed by the villain to counter the hero except in the climax. On the whole, Hari has concocted and packaged his masala contents in the right proportion and has served a tasty dish.
Verdict: Engaging masala

PEN SINGAM MOVIE REVIEW

PEN SINGAM MOVIE REVIEW Review by : Behindwoods review board Starring: Uday Kiran, Meera Jasmine, Karthiga.Direction: Bali SrirangamMusic: IlayarajaProduction: J Nandini Arts Kalaignar handling the script and dialogues of the film itself makes it special and evinces a lot of interest. It is quite amazing that he is up to the task of scripting a full length feature film even on his 87th birthday. The title of the film suggests that unlike the normal Kollywood fare, this will definitely offer the female characters scope to perform. And, with any Kalaignar script, the dialogues would certainly be a highlight and we expect some really well written lines throughout the film.
Pen Singam is the story of Udhay Kiran and Meera Jasmine. The former is a forest officer while the latter is in a clerical post in his office. Both of them fall in love. Udhay Kiran is also in full support of Meera Jasmine’s ambition of becoming an IPS officer and she ultimately achieves her aim. Meanwhile, the forest mafia is in full swing, smuggling sandalwood and the leader of this gang is Radha Ravi. Obviously, the paths of Radha Ravi and Udhay Kiran cross while the latter is on duty and they cross swords. The smugglers mark him as their prime enemy and are on the lookout for a way to get rid of him. This is when Richard (Udhay Kiran’s college friend)comes into the picture. At first, he appears to the principled and righteous youngster who wouldn’t take an immoral step. And, impressed by these traits of his, Dharshana Sen falls in love and they decide to get married. But, very close to the marriage Richard’s true face is revealed. But, a few reconciliations later, the marriage takes place. But, things can never be the same again. And, Udhay Kiran who was involved in arranging Richard’s marriage feels enraged at this sudden change in character. But, Richard is now already a part of Radha Ravi’s schemes. In the ensuing events, Dharshana Sen is killed and Udhay Kiran finds himself behind bars. This is where Meera Jasmine (now an IPS officer) takes over and has to find a way to get Udhay Kiran acquitted. Rohini, Udhay Kiran’s mother is a judge. She resigns her post to be her son’s counsel. How the duo help in proving Udhay Kiran’s innocence is the crux of the film.
The script has got many twists and turns to keep viewers interested. But, it is not as contemporary as one would have liked it to be. Though taut for most parts, there are a couple of major loopholes in the script; especially the point where Dharshana Sen decides to go ahead with the marriage to Richard even after getting a clear inkling of his intentions. But, that apart the script maintains a consistent tenor throughout the length of the film. But, comedy by Vivek is a major hampering to the proceedings. It has absolutely no value and ends up just as an irritating interspersion.
Udhay Kiran is convincing in his portrayal as the forest officer. Radha Ravi is his usual menacing self, but there is nothing new in his role; something we have seen him do umpteen number of times. Richard is not up to the mark with his villainy. In spite of quite a few years in the industry, his acting skills remain pretty rudimentary. Meera Jasmine does well as the ‘Pen Singam’. But, her role does not seem to have as much weight and substance as the title might suggest.
There are only a couple of scenes where she gets to go into top gear. Rohini is mature and strong in her portrayal. Rambha appears in a small but very significant cameo and fits the bill.
Technically, Pen Singam does not have much that stands out. Music by Deva just about passes muster with nothing out of the ordinary. The lyrics, by five different poets including Kalaignar himself are not the usual ‘jingle’ type stuff that we get these days. Dialogues, the highlight of any Kalaignar script, catch the imagination at places, though not always.
Overall, Pen Singam has got a pretty neat script, which holds one’s attention, but lacks in contemporary value. A couple of holes in the script, a weak and meaningless comedy track and lackluster music come in the way of the Pen Singam’s roar.
Verdict: Kalaignar: still good but not vintage

Car flies off unfinished flyover

CHENNAI: A deadly combination of rash driving and official callousness caused one of the freakiest accidents in the city on Thursday, when a speeding SUV fell off an unfinished rail overbridge in suburban Pallavaram. There were apparently no signboards or barricades at the entrance of the flyover.
The car, which according to eyewitnesses was moving very fast, fell from a height of about 50 feet and landed on the railway track around 11.10am. The driver, who was the lone occupant of the car, was rescued from its mangled remains and admitted to a private hospital in Velachery with head injuries and fractures of the legs.
Passengers waiting at the Pallavaram station witnessed a scene right out of an action movie when the car literally flew off the edge of the flyover and crashed on the railway line. The car driver was later identified as Divakar (30), a resident of Vyasarpadi.
Railway police sources said Divakar was on his way to a private engineering college to pick up an application form for his sister. As GST Road was clogged with traffic, he took the flyover without realising that the structure meant to connect GST Road with Old Pallavaram was incomplete.
Onlookers said some of them at the foot of the bridge had shouted at the driver not to proceed, but Divakar did not hear them as the SUV’s windows were rolled up. Witnesses said the driver could have tried to apply brakes when he realised that there was no road ahead, but it was too late. Fortunately, the vehicle did not get entangled in the high tension power-line over the railway track. Luckily, there was no train passing by.
An official of the state highways department, which is constructing the flyover, admitted on condition of anonymity that not erecting barricades and signboards at the project site was the department’s fault.
A railway police official said the railway track was not damaged. “We used a crane to remove the vehicle from the spot. EMU operations between Tambaram and Chennai Beach were disrupted for more than an hour. A case has been booked against the driver for rash and negligent driving,” he said.

Happy Birthday, Mohan Babu

Date 19-03-2010,
Actor-producer Mohan Babu celebrates his birthday on March 19. Manchu Bhaktavatsalam Naidu was born in 1952 at at Modhugulapalem village in Chittoor district. In the year that has gone by, Mohan Babu has produced a failure (Saleem), but has succeeded in hogging the limelight after a controversy broke over his head when he lunged for a stand on a political issue.
In the last year, he has received brickbats from his colleagues for making provocative statements as if he was representing the film industry, with a lusty abandon. Of course, Mr. Babu replied back to them with a holier-than-thou attitude.
In the year that has gone by, Mohan Babu has won the hearts of many, too. As an actor and a producer, it was a bad year for him. Ogirala Jogaiah of Saleem was a nightmare. Nobody spoke about how much he would have lost on the film. Making the matters worse, YVS Chowdhary slammed a complaint against him.
The one good news for him was that his daughter, the talented Lakshmi Prasanna, turned a producer for a K Raghavendra Rao film. More, very recently, he struck a deal with the veteran to direct a film!
Thus, this year, Mr. Babu can hope for success in the form of at least two films.
His fans would wish to not see him embroiled in controversies.

Imayamum Sigaramum Irattisuzhi Music Review

The audio of ‘Rettaisuzhi’ produced by Shankar's S Pictures was released by Aishwarya Rai. This Thamira directed film is about two village elders and their hilarious adventures around the village. The film is an important film as it has legendary directors who created some of the best known actors who graced Tamil film screens ever, K. Balachander and Bharathraja playing lead roles in a movie for the first time together.
Music for the film is scored by the heavily underrated Karthik Raja. The eldest son of maestro Illayaraja was expected to go places after his superb score in ‘Ullasam’. But he remained unsung even after giving great music in many films like Kadhala Kadhala, Naam Iruvar Nammaku Iruvar, Dum Dum Dum, Three Roses, Album and the recent Achchamundu Achchamundu.
Karthik Raja’s recent offering ‘Rettaisuzhi’ is as usual good for his rich orchestration and folksy melodies. ‘Rettaisuzhi’ reminds you still it’s not time to write off this genius yet.
1. Bum Bum Bumbara Kaathu - Listen here
Singer: Rita, Violin Padma
Lyricist: Palani Bharathi
“Bum Bum Bumbara Kaathu” is a folksy melody with rich orchestration. This song will make you visualise a village in the rains both by lyric and music. Very rural in its mood this song has nice words in harmonious music. The music director makes very good use of Reverbs and the instrumentations. Gentle tinkle sounds like Jaltarang throughout is quite pleasing.
2. Pattaalam Paaruda - Listen here
Singer: Arman Mallik, Sarwan, VKS. Fowsia
Lyricist: V. Ramasamy
“Pattaalam Paaruda” is a basic tune for a song sung by village kids in chorus. We have heard many of this type in recent times. But the pace and rhythm sets this song apart from others. Very fast and peppy this song has some very good interlude BGMs. Instruments used in this song are also very down to earth. Lyric by V. Ramasamy narrates the heroic antics of village kids. Something like this was last heard in ‘Anjali’ by Karthik Raja’s father.
3. Naan Endru Sol - Listen here
Singer: Hariharan, Haricharan, Sriram Parthasarathy
Lyricist: Chandra
“Naan Endru Sol” is a slow number in which the hero remembers his father. Chandra’ nice words amply complimented with slow beats. You have a better version coming up.
4. Poochandi Kannazhagi - Listen here
Singer: Belly Raj, Rita
Lyricist: Annamalai
“Poochandi Kannazhagi” is a fast beat romantic number. Karthik Raja has tried to bring contemporary popular music to the fore with his classical touch. The peppy number rendered by Rita and Belly Raj, has some interesting lyrics and good instrumentations with some traditional flavour. You feel a villupattu style of story telling in this.
5. Para Para Kili - Listen here
Singer: Rahul Nambiar, Deepa Mariam
Lyricist: Palani Bharathi
Pick of the lot. “Para Para Kili” is a soothing number with really good vocals by Deepa Mariam and Rahul Nambiar. This song is well paced and places where the vocals not accompanied with instruments make it appealing.
6. Poochandi Kannazhagi - Listen here
Singer: Hariharan, Shreya Ghoshal
Lyricist: Annamalai
Top of the album. This “Poochandi Kannazhagi” version sung by Hariharan and Shreya Ghoshal is a shade better than the earlier version just because of the great voices of Hariharan and Shreya Ghoshal. This song reveals the versatility of Shreya Ghoshal once again. The way she sings this village fast romantic number in no less than a kuthu rendition. With good promotions this song will top the charts for more time.
7. Naan Endru Sol - Listen here
Singer: Hariharan
Lyricist: Chandra
Another version sung by Hariharan. Hari elevates this song with his honey voice and right pull and push at right places.
On the whole ‘Rettaisuzhi’ by Karthik Raja is good overall. All the songs remind of the good times of his father in the eighties. That’s’ nothing wrong because he takes inspirations only from his father. One thing we again we wish to impress after hearing this album is that if given right chances this introvert music director will go places like his brother Yuvan Shankar Raja but on a different melody pedestal.

He’s the ultimate star Asal

He’s the ultimate star and he sure has lived up to the name. Ajith is the man of the moment and he totally deserves to be. After a long time, Director Saran has offered us a true action movie. Perhaps the last talked about action movie was Kamal Haasan’s starrer ‘Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu’ (VV) by Goutham Menon, though ‘Asal’ is completely different from ‘VV’.
‘Asal’, the latest and classy flick by Sivaji Productions is a feast for all you Ajith’s fans. This is the fourth movie by the Saran- Ajith- Bharadwaj trio, after Kadhal Mannan, Amarkkalam, and Attagasam. However, you won’t find a trace of those movies in this. Saran has totally reformed his creativity in ‘Asal’. Along with screen play writer Yuhi Sethu and few vital inputs from Ajith himself, Saran has made a platter of serious action story in this movie.
Yuhi Sethu’s writing skills and Saran’s movie making skills probably have taken inspiration from a few famous Hollywood flicks and this is a ‘little’ evident in the movie. The story narration can be correlated to many Hollywood gangster flicks that have come in the past.
Asal- the story is based in France, where most action has taken place. Talking about action, the car chase sequences in France designed by stunt master William Ong are sure to make you feel awe. Ajith’s doing a double role in this movie after ‘Attagasam’.
He plays the father and son. Ajith as the father, is serious, composed and has done this role with elegance. Though you won’t see him through out the movie, the senior Ajith’s character would be resonant in your mind.
Lets move to the gist of the story now. The movie’s all about Sons-Father relationship, Brother-Brother relationship and how evil forces enter to change their lives forever. Jeevanandham (Senior Ajith) is an arms manufacturer running the Eurasia Trading Company in Paris, and his consignments are mainly for defence purposes to countries and not to others. He has 3 sons. Shiva (the junior Ajith) and as his half brothers, the slowly growing actor Sampath and ‘Aahaa’ Rajeev portray their wicked roles to perfection. A baddie Shetty played by Kelly Dorjee, who’s a Don back in India has other plans. The other villain is Pradeep Rawat, who plays the role of the dreadful uncle to Jeevanandham’s sons. How the brothers are pulled into the Don’s web, how the uncle tries his evil pranks on them and how the junior Ajith saves wrap up this exciting flick.
Now, are we missing the ladies? Sameera Reddy after her brilliant performance in ‘Vaarnam Aayiram’ is playing the role of the Cultural Attache in the Indian Consulate in Paris. She’s doing a serious role as a diplomat, and it completely suits her. Dubbing for her by Chinmayi should definitely be commended. The other lady is Bhavana, who works for Prabhu back in India. Her innocent role keeps the audience in dilemma as to who ends up winning Ajith’s love.
Giving company as character artistes are producer Prabhu as a friend of the Senior Ajith, and yesteryear hero Suresh as a French Police officer makes a comeback. The other characters for you to look out for are Yuhi Sethu and his accomplices; their raunchy comedy makes the hall have a healthy laugh.
Ajith’s performance is admirable. He appears to be still under the hangover of ‘Billa’ yet he has quite gracefully differentiated his characters as the father and son. Talking about characterization, Ajith is loaded with absolute style and has carried away his costumes to flawlessness. His clothing in this movie is simply superb. Although the cigar in his mouth conveys a wrong message to the youth and his fans, it completes the chic look.
Fight masters Kanal Kannan, Thalapathi Dinesh and Patrick Bruneton have all done a brilliant job and have made Ajith appear superior. The fight sequences are amazing, and director Saran has not shown much of blood shed.
Saran’s hard work is obvious in the movie. But the length and the narration of the story could have been further sliced. In every other scene, dialogue writer Yuhi Sethu, has made fans of Ajith go ga-ga as Ajith’s label Thala has been reiterated plenty of times. The movie has fared well in most departments, but the music has been a cropper. Music director Bharadwaj could have done better work as his combination with Ajith and Saran in the past has been remarkably successful. But solace is offered from Prashanth D Misale, the cinematographer, who has shown us Paris so beautifully in the movie.
According to Asal’s tag line “The Power of Silence”, Ajith has limited dialogues but loaded with action and of course guns. The end product is a true offering for the die-hard Ajith fan. If you are not a die-hard fan of Ajith, after watching ‘Asal’, you’ll unquestionably become one.

Vinnaithandi Varuvaya Movie Review

Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’, (VTV) and you know what its like to cross the sky and get into another dimension called love. ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’ is a popular lyric from the ‘Vennilave Vennilave’ song from ‘Minsara Kanavu’ directed by Rajeev Menon and all of you know that. So director Goutham Vasudev Menon has rightly acknowledged Rajeev Menon in the first card of the Titles. How humble!
Right from the time, the word ‘action’ was told, the film has been creating the ripples of expectation among director Goutham’s fans. He has surely tried his maximum to live up to the expectations. Captain Goutham and his team- comprising of editor Antony, art director Rajeevan, director of photography Manoj Paramahamsa and music by A R Rahman, just look at that combination, have always given us that feeling of modern cinema.
Well technically, the movie is made with high values- Exceptional music, background score, re-recording, classy camera work, foreign locations, etc. All the technicians involved must receive that imperative appreciation for they have done their work with much finesse.
The first in the list of technicians who have to be appreciated would be, undoubtedly, A R Rahman. Man! Isn’t he a creative genius! His 1st movie after the Oscar phenomenon. His music is one of the main reasons to the much acclaimed hype. The re-recording and the background score are really amazing. If you’ve listened to his songs in your personal stereo, then its only half of the magic you have experienced.
The picturisation of the songs is simply remarkable and they complete the magic. God knows how Goutham gets his ideas and the eye of Manoj Paramahamsa who’s done ‘Eeram’ before, not just his eye that thought of those exotic locations but his ‘lens eye’ as well that caught all those beautiful locales. Watch those videos even with half opened eyes and you’ll realize he hasn’t used a camera but a paint brush with the palette of colours from Mother Nature. The colour tones in the movie have been brought out quite amazingly. The songs especially, ‘Hosana’ and ‘Omanna Penne’ shot at Malta, are worth the watch at the cinemas. Songs get major attention in the movie and the other technician we are going to talk about is Rajeevan and his art-work in the sets of a few songs is fascinating. The D.O.P (director of photography) Manoj has used minimal artificial lighting in the movie, showing his signature style.
We’ll come back to the people behind the camera a little later. Now is the time for the people in front of the camera. Trisha and Silambarasan as the lead pair, and quite a few veterans in the movie like Kitty as Silambarasan’s father and Bob Antony as Trisha’s father. All artists have done well especially Ganesh, also one of the producers, who plays Silambarasan’s friend, has acted well, and his dialogue delivery must be appreciated. Lets talk about- Silambarasan! We’ve seen him as a college student, as a mass character and we’ve seen him dance in the middle of the road, typical Chennai style, but can you imagine Silambarasan in formals, as a simple, regular guy-next door, decent and at his best behaviour? Well, he has proved he is not just the normal run-off-the-mill commercial hero but an actor who will mould himself into any character that a story demands. He’s come out of that commercial image with VTV. All were apprehensive about the fact that Silambarasan working with a classy director like Goutham. But the director has been persistent about Silambarasan and he hasn’t let the director down. Silambarasan has been in front of the camera since he was a kid and such a role as ‘Karthik’ in this movie is really not demanding or impossible to him. He hasn’t acted in this movie, but has been himself. His dialogue delivery appeared to be simple, just like how he would talk to anyone in his real life. He is an ambitious and aspiring film maker in the movie and in real life, he really is.
Opposite Silambarasan is pretty lass Trisha. Trisha as Jessie has portrayed her character brilliantly, she hasn’t over acted or under acted, and she’s done it perfectly. Director of Photography, Manoj has prettified Trisha, and she looks prettier than her previous appearances. Saree clad in most of the movie, Trisha has pulled off a terrific performance. Nalini Sriram’s costumes might start a cult with the ladies from now on.
Now we’re moving in to the ‘story, screenplay and dialogues’, by Goutham. Don’t expect us to be spoilsport and reveal the storyline and the cute screenplay of the movie. The first half till the interval will grab your attention as it has been nicely written and well taken. Some cute scenes between Silambarasan and Trisha look really candid and the camera man has managed to capture that cheeky chemistry between the two. According to the film promos, theatrical trailers, etc ‘VTV’ is a love story ‘with a difference’. There wasn’t anything particularly different to talk about, except for Simbu being younger to Trisha by one year, and the screenplay that won’t tell you till the end if they’ve fall in love and live happily ever after?
Silambarasan wooing Trisha, their second pairing after ‘Alai’, is not at all impractical and you can relate their characters to real life. Their chemistry is enticing and they actually appear a cute pair. Silambarasan’s attitude in the movie is straight forward while Trisha is homely and conservative. The one thing you can’t relate to life or even agree is the hero meeting the heroine at her house, at his will without anyone noticing. Cinema has grown of age, or have people!?
The screenplay in the first half is slow and cute but the screenplay in the second half is even slower.
A faster screenplay might spoil the feel of a romantic movie. Back to technicians, Editor Antony has done a decent job but could have advised his Captain to chop off a few reels. Some of the audience thought the movie got over and they got off their seats when a song was being played! but the movie continued for 10 more minutes after that.
Silambarasan, we all know fights well and dances amazingly. There is just one stunt sequence in the movie and that’s designed by Shiva who’s handled the fight scenes very well and Silambarasan is the demi-god we know, sustains not a single scratch on him. Silambarasan’s dance is admirable. Keeping in mind that most of the songs are not dance numbers, you’ll still see him sway to those tunes convincingly.
Dialogues in the movie and especially Silambarasan’s dialogue delivery is worth mentioning. The dialogues make you giggle at times, and sometimes they make you feel- how one can be so romantic.
Director Goutham has tried something ‘different’ but the audience is perplexed at the end. You wouldn’t know how to react after the climax. Weird! If you’ve been following all his movies and know his style of film making, then you would appreciate his work. There were rumours about two climaxes to the movie. The version the audience saw on the first day is not really lively.
Finally a disclaimer: If and only if, you have all the time in the world, and you like the slow romantic genre, you’ll enjoy this one.
VTV- a feel (long) 'good' film!
